I am interested in the process of making and methodology and the way that we perceive and interpret visual messages, how we can make assumptions, sometimes missing subtle nuances.

I studied Three-Dimensional Design at Hornsey College of Art, London in the early 1970's and set up a silversmithing  practice  in Clerkenwell, London, sharing a studio and collaborating in projects with Stanley Reece, engraver during the period '70s to the late '80s. On moving to the Norfolk coast I gained a passion for the sea and sailing probably due to having made many silver models of Arabic sailing dhow boats. I made both commissioned and exhibition work during this period and became a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths and a Fellow of the Institute of Professional Goldsmiths.

In 1999 my work premises in Norfolk was reduced to ashes in a devastating fire which destroyed all my previous collected designs, photo records, equipment and much of my past work that I still possessed. This event ended my active participation in silversmithing and I taught art and design practice and theory full time until 2013.

I completed a post-graduate MA at Birmingham’s School of Jewellery, BCU in 2015 which revitalized my enthusiasm for making and the emphasis since then has been on the abstract. I now mainly work with non-precious materials including base metals and vitreous enamels. The fact that these materials are not precious is important to my intentions as the material value ceases then to be a dominant factor of the work.

I like the paring down to simple form and being free in interpretation, both in the making and the materials used and that they are not constrained by the expected.
